Garageband Tutorial

dubstep samplesWelcome back!  Thanks for joining us here at Samplepacks.ca!  Today we learn how to get a full sounding master mix in GarageBand.

We’ll be mastering a loop set from PlatinumLoops’ Dubstep Apocalypse.  If you haven’t check that out already, then be sure to do so.

Getting Started…

Step 1 – Add an EQ.

We can do some pre-equalizing before adding any compression or limiting.  If your mix is decent, these should only be minor tweaks.  Roll off frequencies below 32 Hz.  Add a slight reduction around 200 Hz and small boost around 2 kHz.

Step 2 – Add a compressor.

A compressor will help ‘glue’ our mix together.  It will also help us control any major transient peaks.

Set your Threshold to -16.5 dB and your Ratio 3:1.  Set a fairly quick Attack and boost your gain a few dB’s.

Step 3 – Add a Limiter.

Now we need to get our track louder.  This is where the Limiter comes into play.  It’s common for inexperienced producers to squash the life out of their music at this stage.  Louder is generally perceived as better, but remember, the louder your music is, the less dynamic it is.  You want to maintain a healthy balance between the two.

Experiment with the settings you see below.  Avoid long Release times to prevent any pumping.  Don’t over do your pre-gain input.  Your limiting amount shouldn’t be more than a few dB’s.

Summary

A big part of getting full, loud master is having a solid mix.  If your mix is uneven, you’ll have trouble getting a loud master, so be sure you get that right first.  Be sure to save presets for these devices.  It will save you lots time in the future.
