How to Create insane Wobbles in Massive

October 6, 2012

Massive Fundamentals

Massive is a very powerful synth.  One of its coolest features is the Performer.  As opposed to using an LFO to create a wobble, you can use the Performer to create elaborate sequences.  In a nut shell, the Performer is essentially a step sequencer with interchangeable waveforms.

Take a listen to the Performer in action:

Top producers at Platinumloops use tricks like this to create their devastating dubstep basses and lead synths for their popular range of dubstep samples.

Getting started…

You will need a good starting sound.  Download this preset and pull up Massive.

Massive Presets

Step 1 – Route the Performer to your Filters.

Route the Performer to the Cutoff of your Filters – just as you would an LFO to create a wobble bass.

Since we’re using a Scream filter, we can also route the Performer to the Scream control to modulate that as well.

Step 2 – Setup your Performer.

Set your Rate to 1/16th for now and come down on your Amp slightly.

Step 3 – Create your sequence.

Click on Load Curve.  This will pull up several waveforms you can choose from.  Click on the curve of your choice and then click on the step you wish to drop it on.

Try experimenting with different curves to see how they impact your sequence.

You should notice that there are two rows in the Performer.  Massive allows you to put in two separate sequences so you can morph between them via the XFade control; giving you even more possibilites.

Here’s what my final sequence looked like.

Summary

You can use the Performer to modulate just about anything.  If you’re trying to create some insane wobble sequences, the Performer will quickly become your best friend.  Be sure to save your sequence as a preset so you can access it at a later date and apply it to different sounds.
