For all of its simplicity, Garageband is more capable than most people tend to think it is. In today’s demonstration, we’ll learn how to create a dirty hi-pitched wobble synth from scratch. This type of sound is popular among major Dubstep artists like Skrillex, Doctor P and more. If you’re looking to produce some hard hitting Dubstep music, then this is a sound you’ll want to have in your arsenal.
Have a listen to the sound we’ll create:
Step 1 - Pull up a blank instrument track and choose Hybrid Basic
Reduce the Release to 25.
Step 2 - Add an Auto Filter.
Set your Frequency to 42%. Set your Resonance to 66%. Lower your Intensity to 20%. Lastly, set your Speed to an 1/8th.
Step 3 - Load up a Bit Crusher.
Set your Resolution to 7 and your Sample Reduction to 17x.
Step 4 - Add Distortion
Lower your Drive to 6.5 dB and raise your Tone to 14,000 Hz.
Set your Output Level to -5.5 dB.
Step 5 - Polish off with some EQ.
All we need to do here is boost some of highs and roll off some of the lows.
Tweak the EQ to your liking. You might want more (or less) of the low-mids, depending on the nature of your production.
Enjoy making your next Dubstep banger! We recommend you play around with each of the effects in your signal chain to really make this sound your own. It will also help you learn a lot more about sound design!
