Garageband Tutorial

Garageband is more capable than most people think it is.  Although simple, it’s still capable of producing quality sounds when in the right hands.  In today’s demonstration we’ll look at how to automate a wobble synth to give it more character and rhythm. Techniques like this are used in top notch dubstep samples produced by masters like Platinumloops.

As you can hear, we have a high pitched wobble in the style of artists like Doctor P.

Getting Started…

Step 1 – Lay down a melody for your wobble.

It doesn’t have to be too complex,  We’ll spice it up with our automation.

Step 2 – Expand your Automation Lane.

Step 3 – Choose the parameter you wish to automate.

Since we’re working with the Analog Sync synth, we’ll choose Sync Modulation.

If we weren’t using Analog Sync, then we’d choose to automate the speed of our Auto Filter.

Step 4 – Draw in your automation envelopes.

Automating our Sync Modulation allows us to change the speed of our wobble.  Higher values result in faster wobbles, whereas, lower values result in slower wobbles.

As you can see, our wobble speed increases throughout the second bar and gradually slows down over the 3rd and 4th bars.
